For the past 37 years Cecelia Strickland has been helping customers choose the latest fashions.
She is the manager and buyer for Denison's, the women's specialty store in the Suffolk Shopping Center. She also plans and organizes the store's frequent fashion shows held throughout Hampton Roads
"I try to buy things that department stores don't sell," said Strickland, who buys designer clothes and accessories, such as shoes, handbags and Brighton jewelry .
"I've been at the store so long that our customers are like my replica clothing family. When I buy things, I have people in mind that I'm buying for. Trends come and go, and there are many things you can buy for one season - but customers may not like that. I try really hard to buy what they'll like."
Cheerful and energetic, Strickland welcomes working friends who sometimes bring food and spend their lunch hours in the store. "They say it's therapy for them."
A Gatesville, N.C., resident, Strickland was born into a closely knit family , the fourth of six siblings . She grew up in Suffolk and graduated from Forest Glen High School.
At 15, she began to work at lesser's??? House of Fashion on West Washington Street, which opened its doors in 1924. "I worked for Mr. (Gene) Denison, and he trained me and taught me well."
In the 1970 s, the name of the store changed to Denison's and relocated to North Main until Suffolk Shopping Center was built .
When Denison gave her the opportunity to buy the store in 2000, she wasn't in a position to do so. Her sister and brother-in-law, Kandy and Denny Lewis, however, agreed the time was right for them, and they became the new owners.
For the past 10 years Kandy Lewis, who lives in Suffolk, had a successful banking career. She is in charge of the store's books, and their sister, Virginia Small, works in the stockroom and waits on customers.

What has been the most rewarding experience of your job? Making so many lifetime friends over the years.
What has been the most challenging? Making selections for the next season that I hope the customers will like.
If a snapshot was taken of you enjoying the perfect day, what would it look like? Coming to work early, the store filled with wonderful people and making everyone happy with their selections; listening to customers and trying to make a difference in their lives.
