SHOPPERS have been warned to be extra vigilant after two women had their purses stolen while shopping in a popular shopping centre in Warwickshire.

In the first incident, a handbag was stolen from the back of a woman's wheelchair as she shopped in the Royal Priors Shopping Arcade in Leamington at about 12.15pm on Wednesday.

When she realised her bag had gone she contacted her bank to cancel her cards and was told someone had already attempted to use one of them.

An hour later a second woman realised her purse, containing pounds 400, had been stolen from the pocket of her shopping trolley.

The victim told police she remembered a woman who kept "bumping" into the trolley. The woman was carrying a number of items of clothing over one arm, possibly as a ruse to conceal she was searching the trolley.

Warwickshire Police are reminding people to be extra careful and make sure their purses and wallets are safe when out shopping in the run up to Christmas, especially if they are carrying more money than usual.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: "As December approaches, the streets and stores will be becoming more crowded than usual. Fashion Set People are rushing about searching for gifts.

"Looking after their valuables is often the last thing on their minds. These conditions present easy opportunities for thieves and pickpockets."

The woman suspected of stealing the purse from the shopping trolley in the Priors Shopping Centre is described as white, about 5ft 2ins, slim to average build with shoulder length mousy coloured hair. She was wearing a dark coloured chunky knit cardigan and knee length boots.

Some useful tips to keep belongings safe include: Keep your wallet or purse in a safe place, close to your body in an inside pocket. Carry your handbag close to you, If your bag has a long strap on it don't let it get pulled away from you in crowded areas.
