Shoppers warned after bag snatches

A Warning has been issued to women at Stroud to beware of thieves after a mini-spate of handbag snatches in the area.

Police had dealt with four such incidents in recent days and their spokesman, Matt Ford, said shoppers in particular should remain security conscious.

"The best advice includes never leaving handbags and purses unattended," Mr Ford said.

The first bag went missing in Waitrose in London Road at 10.30am on Saturday.

Mr Ford said a woman from Stonehouse had left it in her shopping trolley shortly before it disappeared.

The small navy bag had a black purse in it that contained cash and various bank, credit and store cards as well as a driving licence and cheque book. A Nokia mobile phone was also inside.

The incident was number 280 of August 4 if anyone can help police inquiries.

Roughly half an hour later a female from Cashes Green was in the Bon Marche store in Stroud High Street when her shoulder bag and the purse inside were stolen.

The victim lost pounds130 cash and a house key, and the incident was number 306 of August 4 for anyone who can

At roughly the same time a third handbag vanished, this time from a Stroud woman's trolley at Sainsbury's in Dudbridge.

The cream bag had a dark brown leather purse in it which had pounds55 inside, plus various cards and a cheque book. Incident number 345 of August 4.

Finally at around 6pm that evening a fourth bag was stolen.

It was taken from the reception area of the Bear Hotel at Rodborough and was logged as incident 555 of August 4.
