UN Security Council permanent five support Cyprus reunification talks

NICOSIA, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- The five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council on Monday endorsed efforts aimed at reunifying the divided island of Cyprus.

The ambassadors of the United States, China, Russia, Britain and France in Nicosia were called by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias to brief them on the results of a recent visit by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and progress in the ongoing UN- led negotiations.

Speaking on behalf of all five ambassadors, British High Commissioner in Nicosia Peter Millet said they had a very good briefing.

"We welcomed his briefing and we welcomed the progress that has been made in the negotiations. And we, as P5, gave the President all our support in his efforts to reunify the island and ...our support for the UN in facilitating that process," he said.

Christofias, who also acts as Greek Cypriot leader, and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in negotiations for the last 17 months on a mutually acceptable solution to the decades-long Cyprus problem.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey militarily intervened and occupied the north of the island following a coup by a group of Greek officers.

In 1983, the Turkish Cypriot authorities declared breakaway and set up "the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," which is recognized only by Turkey.

UN special envoy to Cyprus Alexander Downer said on Monday that the two community leaders are to decide within the next few days about how to continue their talks, before recessing ahead of a Turkish Cypriot vote to elect a new leader.

He added that both Christofias and Talat are committed to continuing their talks despite the vote, which may lead to hardliner politician Dervis Eroglu becoming new leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

"From the perspective of the United Nations ... we look forward to the two leaders continuing to work through the issues they need to work through," Downer said.
